Shea Ili to Miss Remainder of 2025 Season, Returns to Melbourne for Recovery

The Wellington Saints have confirmed that veteran guard Shea Ili will not return for the remainder of the 2025 Sal’s NBL season, as he heads back to Melbourne to continue his return-to-play protocols following a head knock sustained in the Saints’ recent home game against the Jets.

While the news is a blow to Saints fans and the team alike, Head Coach Aaron Young says the decision is absolutely the right one for Ili and his family.

“We thank Shea and his family for his trust and commitment to our club this season,” said Young. “It’s unfortunate circumstances, but 100% the right call for him and his family’s future. His impact has been felt within our group every day, and how he has handled this difficult setback says a lot about who he is as a person. The Saints family wish him great health and strength going forward in his career.”

Ili has been a crucial figure in Saints history, helping guide the club to multiple championships and bringing a level of professionalism and leadership both on and off the court. General Manager Jordan Mills echoed that sentiment, acknowledging the tough nature of the decision.

“We’re sad to see Shea and his family go back to Melbourne to continue his rehab with United,” said Mills. “We know how much he wanted to get another title with us and he’ll be supporting from afar. Like Aaron said, he’s been the best teammate and had a huge impact on the group on and off the floor. We hope to see him back in Saints blue in the future.”

Ili also shared a heartfelt message with fans as he departs the team for the season.

“Sorry Saints fans, I’m sad to say goodbye for the rest of the season due to my injury. I need to focus on my recovery and this time is crucial to get me back to 100%. The boys are in great hands and have the squad to get the job done. Excited to see the boys get to work and bring that trophy back home.”

Fans and the wider Saints whānau join in wishing Shea a full and speedy recovery.
