Troy Plumtree Returns to Wellington Saints for 2025 Season Ahead of Cal Poly Commitment
Promising basketball talent Troy Plumtree is set to rejoin the Wellington Saints for the 2025 season before embarking on his collegiate career with the Cal Poly Mustangs in the United States.
Plumtree, a 17-year-old small forward standing at 6'5" (196 cm), has been a standout in New Zealand basketball. He played a pivotal role in leading Wellington College to a national high school championship in 2023, averaging an impressive 33 points, 19 rebounds, and six assists per game.
His international experience is equally noteworthy. As a member of the New Zealand U-17 National Team, Plumtree contributed to the team's fourth-place finish at the 2024 FIBA U-17 World Cup in Turkey, averaging 14 points and eight rebounds per game.
Wellington Saints head coach Aaron Young expressed enthusiasm about Plumtree's return:
"Troy is an X-Factor who lifts the energy in any live setting. His commitment to compete and play out every possession is rewarding to watch. Expect a massive season from him where his role will be defined as an impact player on both ends."
Plumtree's athletic lineage is notable; his father, John Plumtree, is a former rugby coach for the New Zealand All Blacks, and his brother, Taine, plays international rugby for the Welsh National Team.
Troy shares his eagerness to learn from the squad and Coach Aaron: “Excited to learn from experienced players and Aaron at the Saints in 2025 before continuing my career in the American college system"
Looking ahead, Plumtree has committed to joining the Cal Poly Mustangs for the 2025-26 NCAA season. Cal Poly head coach Mike DeGeorge commented on Plumtree's potential:
"Troy is a long and versatile wing who can switch and rebound and plays extremely hard. He comes from a rugby family and has only played basketball for the past four years. He has a very high ceiling, and we anticipate him really developing in our program."
Before transitioning to collegiate basketball, Plumtree's focus remains on making a significant impact with the Wellington Saints in the upcoming season. His return is highly anticipated by fans and teammates alike, eager to witness his contributions on both ends of the court.
Plumtree's journey reflects his dedication and rapid development in basketball, and his upcoming season with the Saints is expected to further showcase his talents before he advances to the next level of his career at Cal Poly.
