Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough Against Tuatara

The Mills Albert Wellington Saints produced a determined second-half comeback but were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 96-88 to the Jadcup Auckland Tuatara on Sunday afternoon.

In a game that featured several momentum swings, the Saints remained within striking distance throughout and mounted a strong late challenge after trailing by as many as 19 points.

Auckland opened the contest with an efficient offensive display, taking a 33-27 lead at the first break before extending their advantage in the second quarter. The Tuatara entered halftime ahead 56-43 behind strong contributions from Zach Riley and Rob Loe.

The home side continued to build its lead during the third quarter, but the Saints refused to let the game slip away. Akech Aliir provided a major spark on both ends of the floor, while Elijah Pepper helped drive Wellington's offence as the visitors steadily chipped away at the deficit.

The Saints' persistence paid off in the fourth quarter. After trailing by double digits for much of the evening, Wellington surged back into contention and cut the margin to just five points with a little over a minute remaining.

Despite the late charge, Auckland held firm in the closing stages, converting key free throws and making crucial defensive plays to secure the victory.

Aliir led the Saints with an impressive double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Carlin Davison contributed 15 points, five assists and three blocks. Izayah Le'afa added 13 points and five assists in another solid performance.

The Saints now turn their attention to the next challenge as they continue their push toward the postseason.
