Wellington Saints edge Nelson Giants in overtime thriller
The Mills Albert Wellington Saints secured a thrilling 111 to 109 overtime victory over the NBS Nelson Giants in front of an energetic home crowd, surviving a dramatic contest that went right down to the final possession.
The Giants came out with plenty of energy and matched the Saints from the opening tip, continuing the competitive form shown earlier by their Rapid League side. The two teams traded baskets throughout the opening stages before Wellington found its rhythm late in the first half.
Strong defensive pressure and efficient offence allowed the Saints to build a double-digit lead before halftime, putting themselves in control of the contest.
Nelson refused to go away. The Giants erased the deficit during the third quarter and set up a tense final period, with neither side able to create separation. After an intense fourth quarter, the scores remained locked, sending the game into overtime.
The extra period delivered more drama. The Saints responded first to open up an advantage, but the Giants fought their way back behind a determined effort led by Liam Judd. Nelson had one final opportunity to steal the win in the closing seconds, but the shot missed its mark as Wellington held on for a memorable 111 to 109 victory.
Donte Ingram led the Saints with an outstanding all-around performance, finishing with 26 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Braylon Luli added 18 points, while Jordan Hunt filled the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
For the Giants, Shane Gatling poured in a game-high 33 points, while Tohi Smith-Milner recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds. Liam Judd added 16 points in a spirited performance.
