Saints on the Top of the Table with Four Wins 28 Apr 2013

The Wellington Saints go to 4-0, defeating the Zerofees Southland Sharks 83-75, while the OceanaGold Nuggets also remain undefeated with a 96-81 win over the James Blond Super City Rangers

It was another tough win for the Saints, as new import Bryant Markson tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds, while forward Casey Frank also grabed a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Point guard Lindsay Tait added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes.

The visitors got off to a quick start, taking an early 16-2 lead, putting the Sharks under pressure.

But the home side responded with a run of their own, cutting the gap to six at the end of the first and then taking a six point lead during the second period.

Wellington managed to regroup and take back a six point lead at the break and then led by eleven in the third quarter.

Again Southland would respond and managed to tie the game at 50 apiece. American forward Brian Conklin the major factor in the Sharks comeback and had his best game of the season, collecting 25 points and 11 rebounds.

It was a game of runs, as the Saints would end the quarter with a 9-2 spurt to push their lead back up to seven.

Wellington would start the fourth period off well, pushing their lead up to 13, which would be enough to hold the Sharks from a comeback win.

Southland stifled Wellington forcing them to turn the ball over twenty times, but they will be disappointed with their foul count which was 24-15.

It was a much improved performance from the Sharks who were blown out last week against the Hawks.

Sharks got handy minutes from new signing Leon Henry, who despite just meeting his new team mates, added 10 points and six rebounds in twenty minutes.

It wasn't the greatest of shooting nights for shooting guards Kevin Braswell and Corey Webster.

Braswell had 15 points, but shot 6/22 from the field, while Webster shot 4/15 for his 13.

Sharks (1-2) will now have a week with their full squad available and will be hosting the Fico Finance Nelson Giants (3-0) next Saturday.

Saints will now play an away and home series against the Telecom Business Hub Jets, who troubled Wellington last season, sweeping the series.

In Otara, the Rangers suffered their fourth straight defeat, as they had no answer for the red hot Nuggets.

Swing man Akeem Wright had a game high 29 points, but it was not his best shooting performance, going 10/27 from the field.

Beny Anthony added 19, but again was plagued with foul trouble, eventually fouling out in under 18 minutes.

Rangers also had foul problems, with five players fouling out and point guard Houston O'Riley (14 points) surviving on four.

It was a stand out performance from young Rangers forward Patrich Bolstad, who grabbed 16 rebounds and 13 points.

American Carl Buck added 14 points and seven assists, but did commit ten turnovers.

The home side got off to a good start in their first home game, taking 27-20 lead.

But the experience of the Nuggets proved to much for the young Rangers, as they would win the next three quarters.

Trailing by double digits in the final period, the Rangers managed to cut the lead to eight with three minutes to go, but the Nuggets would go on a 13-2 run to dispel any comeback from the hosts.

Nuggets (3-0) will return home to play five straight games, as they look to make an early push for a playoff spot.

Rangers (0-4) play again at home against The Good Home Taranaki Mountain Airs, who could also be looking for their first win of the season, as they will play the Hawks the night before.
