Saints win title number 9 10 Jun 2016

The Wellington Saints have won title number nine after defeating the Waitakere Rangers 94-82.

Leon Henry led the Saints with 26 points and 13 rebounds, Tai Wesley had 19 and BJ Anthony added 14 points.

Wellington continue their dominance in the NBL competition with their fourth title since 2010, but this one will be special as it was their first title won away from home since 2003 when they defeated the Waikato Titans.

It was also the dream start Kevin Braswell, who after retiring as a player last year with a title for Southland, took up his first coaching job with Wellington, leading them to an overall record of 15 wins and five losses in argubaly one of the most competitive NBL season in a number of years.

It was only fitting that Wellington had to play the defending champion Sharks in the semi finals, this time in front of a packed crowd in ILT stadium, Invercargill.

Wellington managed to defeat Southland in a closely fought 79-75 win. Torrey Craig scored 26 and Wesley added 20. It was back to back Finals MVP's for Wesley after winning it with the Sharks last year.
